Fundamental Principle Of Multiplication
1. Principle of Multiplication
Rule:
If one operation can be done in m ways, and a second operation in n ways, then both can be done in
➡ m × n ways.
Example:
A man enters a hall through one of 12 gates and exits through one of 11 different gates.
Total number of ways = 12 × 11 = 132
Principle of Addition
Rule:
If one operation can be done in m ways, and a mutually exclusive operation in n ways, then either of them can be done in
➡ m + n ways.
Example:
In a class of 25 students, there are 15 boys and 10 girls.
Ways to select a monitor (boy or girl) = 15 + 10 = 25
